POSITION SUMMARY:

The Small Business Consultant (SBC) position involves both in office and outreach work to promote women's business ownership and growth in the Washington, D.C. Capital Region.  The Small Business Consultant provides guidance for those seeking to begin a business or those strengthening an existing business.  In conjunction with other staff, the SBC develops education and ongoing support programming for business owners.  The SBC assists in the development and maintenance of relationships with partner organizations to provide business ownership assistance to all women including economically challenged and minority women.  With other staff, the SBC explores and develops new markets for WBC programming. The SBC reports to the Director of the DC Women's Business Center.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct initial client intake and assessment and provide initial recommendations and referrals.
  • Provide one-on-one trusted guidance to clients seeking business and financial assistance by developing goal plans and giving assignments to help clients start and improve their small businesses.
  • Assist in developing innovative training and programs to serve clients
  • Assist in creating content for materials used for Center outreach, promotions, success stories, events and training.
  • Facilitate training to clients incorporating best practices for adult learners
  • Coordinate and manage comprehensive reporting of clients served.
  • Communicate and build relationships with partner and referral organizations.
  • Give logistical support to the WBC's programs.
  • Assist in marketing the Center and coordinating events hosted by the Center.
  • Other Duties as assigned by the Director.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in the development of outcome reports for the Center.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Small Business Development Specialist should possess the following skill sets:

  • Working knowledge of business development
  • Knowledge of cash flow analysis and financial statements
  • Ability to work effectively with women from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment individual must be highly self-motivated with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable speaking and presenting in public
  • Strong computer skills, including Database Management, Excel, MS Word, Social Media

ADDITIONAL INFO:

  • Bachelor's Degree, MBA or related degree preferred. Equivalent experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Must be able to work occasional early mornings, evenings and Saturday mornings
  • Reliable access to transportation is preferred.
  • Successful candidates will have an entrepreneurial spirit and be comfortable wearing multiple hats.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
 
Communication: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Includes activities in which incumbent must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately or quickly.
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to discern the differences in sound.
Repetitive motion: Substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers to operate office machinery (computer, phone, copier, etc.)
Sedentary work: Negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work involves remaining stationary most of the time. (50% or more)
Visual Acuity: Close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer screen and extensive reading.
 
The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
